As I sleep, I toss and turn on the ground, my mind plagued with guilt at the mere idea of myself having had any involvement in this brutal destructive act. As the night becomes day, my mind begins to ease.

I awake in the uncertain morning light with a different feeling than when I lay down the night before. I think to myself, “I did not directly cause this. I did not want this. If I had known, I would have not done the work I did. I did not kill anybody. I did not kill my home. I did not kill my tomorrow.

I sit at the extinguished fire pit as the man and woman rise from their collective slumber. Staring off into the nothingness created by man, I do not hear any sound until a hand meets my shoulder.

“Are you okay? Hello?” The woman inquires as her hand rests beside my neck.

“Yes. Just thinking is all. Thanks for the company.” With that, I dusted myself off and headed towards the path of torn concrete, stretching to meet the horizon.

“Leaving so soon?” The man asked.

“Yes, as I said, I appreciate the company, I really do.” I paused momentarily. “I’m looking for something.”

“What could you possibly be looking for amongst all of this?”

“Tomorrow. I’m looking for tomorrow.”

And with that, my feet were back on the road. I did not look back, only forward. I may have played a hand in destroying the world, but I will definitely play a hand in creating it once more.
