about

As I continue to walk, both my legs and heart begin to grow weary. I have stopped to rest eight times, not that I have been counting. On the ninth evening, I see the flickering of a fire blazing afar.

A small fire, probably a campfire. My heart fills with hope of what may lie ahead of me. I hasten my steps, my heart pounding in my chest as I see a makeshift sitting area ahead of me. I finally get to the fire itself, but to my disappointment, there is nobody here. I feel tears of frustration welling up in my eyes as I am startled by a voice.

“Get away, robbers! We’ve told you to leave us alone one time too many! I’ve got a gun, man. Not afraid of anything anymore.”

I raise my hands in the air. “I’m not a robber. I am a scientist. I… was a scientist. I was just looking for other people, I swear. I’m not worth your bullet, sir.”

I hear nothing but footsteps as a man and woman slowly walk up to me, finally entering my vision as they draw near. The man has no gun, and the woman looks frightened. He and the woman walk across from me, on the opposite side of the campfire, and sit down. The man apologizes to me for the scare, and goes on to explain that there are plenty of survivors. He continued.

“Hell, I figure you’d have already met somebody by now, it’s been like… what, two weeks now?”

I gasp, and the woman corrects the man. She tells me this is the eighteenth day since the explosion. I tell them that I know I have only been walking for eight days, and they are astonished, as am I, that I woke up at all. The man and woman speak to me for hours about the people who died in the explosion, and the many survivors trying to stay alive in this new world.

Growing tired, I lay on the ground, looking into the dark clouds of change above my head. Maybe we’re going to get a second chance at the human race. My mind begins to shift onto my former job, and the projects I worked on.

Confidential two weeks ago, not so important now. All I even know is I was testing certain elements for their volatile properties when mixed with certain acids. These elements were not native to earth. Is there any way I played a part in this destruction unknowingly? I feel a tightness in my stomach, and hesitantly fall into a restless slumber.
